Text Publishing House returns again to the work of the famous French writer Irène Nemirovsky, who tragically died in Auschwitz in 1942 year. In the novel “The Wine of Loneliness” (1935), Irene Nemirovsky tells the story of Hélène Karol, a girl from a Jewish family. At first she lives in a provincial Ukrainian town, then moves to St. Petersburg. After the October Revolution, having witnessed cruel scenes, he fled with his family to Finland, and from there to France. Against this historical background, the author talks about Helen's difficult relationship with her parents. Lonely and deprived of childhood, from an early age she sees human feelings turned inside out, a vicious, broken life, full of contradictions, lies and suffering. And yet, having drunk the bitter cup of the wine of loneliness, Helen eventually starts everything from scratch.
“The Wine of Loneliness” is a surprisingly spiritual novel. With sensual precision, Nemirovsky reveals corners of her childhood, showing what she learned from Tolstoy and Proust.
