Early tells the story of Sergei Tretyakov, who rose to a high position first in the KGB and then in the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service) - after the collapse of the USSR, it replaced the KGB intelligence service, which was in charge of foreign states. (The title of the book was suggested by Tretyakov’s KGB nickname, “Comrade Jean”). From 1995 to 2000, Colonel Tretyakov was the main SVR agent in the United States: as a New York resident, he supervised approximately 60 agents who acted against the United States and its allies in UN. Although he was a KGB agent for three generations, Tretyakov became disillusioned with the Soviet system and the one that replaced him, and in 2000 he defected to the Americans. Early made public the fact that for several years before his escape (the exact period is not specified ) Tretyakov secretly worked for the FBI, risking his life almost daily.
