Yulia Dobrovolskaya was born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1917. Translator of Italian fiction, teacher of Italian at the Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages (1946–1950) and at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (1956–1965). Author of textbooks and dictionaries. In Italy, where she has lived since 1982, Yulia Dobrovolskaya taught Russian, as well as the theory and practice of translation at the Universities of Milan, Venice, and Trieste. Twice (1976, 1987) she was awarded the prestigious Culture Prize of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers of Italy. Currently lives in Milan. These notes are reminiscent of table conversations among friends somewhere in a Moscow kitchen of the 60s and 70s, their intonation is so genuine and purely confidential. They are written “postscript,” that is, after hundreds of pages of translations, textbooks, and dictionaries. “I write only what is engraved in my memory and what my soul lies to,” says Yulia Abramovna, “and my soul most of all lies to my friends, those who are scattered around the world and who are no longer there.” Therefore, “Postscript” was deliberately conceived and written “instead of memoirs,” as stories about friends. “Separation from friends is the high price that one has to pay for emigration,” the author repeats more than once.
