The book of the German historian Lutz Niethammer “Questions for German Memory” does not pretend to present the actual history of the twentieth century “as it really was”, its goal is to touch upon the personal, subjective, emotionally charged memory of the Germans, their perception of historical events and own biography. Drawing on a large array of biographical interviews, Niethammer outlines the main contours of the landscape of memories that remained in the memory of the war generation of Germans by the mid-1980s - memories of the war, of life at the front and in the rear, of the first post-war years in West Germany and about milestone events in the history of the GDR. Translation: Elizaveta Shcherbakova, Kirill Levinson
