"The Ivory Tower" (White Tower) is the last unfinished novel-satirical allegory of the famous American writer Henry James. In this book, the author explores the theme of shortcomings and contradictions of the university environment and society in general. The main character, Professor Theodore Colston, witnesses his own transformation in a group of utopian scientists living in the isolated world of "Idyll". The graphically described university microcosm becomes a striking image of the conflicting nature of knowledge, ambition and moral prowess. The novel highlights the clash of ideals and real life, using ambiguous symbols and irony to paint a critique of science and morality. The White Tower remains one of Henry James's greatest works left unfinished, yet an extremely important contribution to American and world literature.
