Vienna, early 20th century. Luciusz Kszelewski is a young man from an aristocratic Polish family. Unlike the brothers, who chose traditional occupations for the gentry, he decides to become a doctor - but at the height of his studies in Europe, a world war breaks out. Fascinated by romantic tales of military surgery, he enlists in the army, expecting to be assigned to a well-organized field hospital. But when Luciusz arrives at the place of service in the Carpathian mountains, he discovers that this is not a huge hospital, but a makeshift hospital located in an old wooden church, and even devastated by a typhus epidemic. The surviving medical staff fled, leaving only the nun sister, who is surrounded by a strange mystery. Luciusz turns out to be the only doctor for many miles around, a surgeon, although he has never operated on anyone before.
