An American historian, political scientist, specialist in Russia and Eastern Europe Professor Dallin reconstructs the history of the German occupation of Soviet territories during World War II. He begins his research by studying the historical conditions of the German invasion of the USSR in 1941, the motivation of the Nazi leadership in the first months of the war and the organization of the occupation government. The author then analyzes Germany's long-term goals in the occupied territories - including the national question - and their implementation in Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, the Caucasus, the Crimea, and Russia itself. Particular attention is paid to the German approach to the organization of agriculture and industry, the attitude towards prisoners of war, forcibly mobilized workers and collaborators, as well as issues of culture, education and religion. The final part is devoted to German politics, propaganda and the use of defectors and ends with an outline of the experiments of "political war" in 1944-1945.The narrative is accompanied by detailed maps and diagrams.
