Anne of Green Gables by Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1972) was first published in 1908. Half a century later, the story of the kind and spontaneous orphan girl Anya Shirley, who ended up on the Green Gables farm, won the hearts of young readers. The work has gained great popularity and is now published in many countries. Films and even cartoons have been made based on the novel, and the house-museum on Prince Edward Island, dedicated to Anya, is constantly visited by crowds of tourists - admirers.
