At the end of July - early, 1941 August in the district of the Ukrainian city Uman were surrounded and 6th is almost fully destroyed and 12th to the army of South front. The Uman caldron became one of the largest defeats of Red Army. 6 soviet corps and 17 divisions burned out in a caldron, irretrievable losses made 18,5 thousand persons, and more than 100 thousand red army soldiers were taken prisoner. Many of them after will perish in a clay quarry, camp of prisoners of war, known as Uman pit . In a captivity besides two commanders by armies - lieutenant-general Музыченко and major-general Понеделина (after war shot up on the sentence of the Military college of Supreme Court) - four commanders of corps and eleven commanders of divisions appeared. A battle under Uman until now remains one of the most insufficiently known pages of Great Patriotic war. This book is an unique chronicle of sanguinary battle, based on materials of not only soviet but also German archives. The wide circle of documents of Вермахта allowed to the author to give a glance on tragic history of surroundings 6th and 12th armies by the eyes of opponent, showing that Germans perceived the fighters of Red Army as threatening and dangerous enemy. Archives throw light both on rock circumstances that resulted in death two soviet armies and on the exploit of thousands of remaining nameless fighters and commanders, by the courage of detaining advancement German connections east and thus blowing off Hitler блицкриг.
