“The Return” is an enticing story because I wrote it for Mystery Stories—in those days I was one of their “main” authors. I got up to $20 a story, I was getting rich, I used to get paid half a cent a word, now I got paid a penny. I wrote this story, sent it to the publishers, and they RETURNED it: they said we don’t need this one, it’s not like traditional ghost stories. [I sent] the story to Mademoiselle - they responded with a telegram: such a story does not suit our magazine, and therefore we will change the magazine to fit it. They did a Halloween special and invited other writers; Kay Boyle wrote the article, Charles Addams agreed to do a full-page illustration. This helped me enter the New York literary community: my story was found in Truman Capote's Mademoiselle. Courier after all.
