Neither in myths nor in the poems of Homer and Hesiod are the images of gods, heroes and kings presented clearly. Therefore, artists are no less responsible than poets for how the ancient Greeks saw and how we see the inhabitants of Olympus and the main characters of the Trojan War. Vasographers and sculptors sought to depict them as people in whom one could feel a “powerful spirit” and “strength of nature.” Creating the appearance of characters from myths and epics, they acted like modern theater artists. It is an exciting task to follow how the appearance of the characters in myths and epics has changed over the centuries, depending on the changing attitude towards them. The book of Alexander Stepanov, a candidate of art history, professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and research fellow at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences of St. Petersburg State University, author of the book “Essays on the Poetics and Rhetoric of Architecture,” published in “NLO,” is dedicated to its solution.
