The book “The Divine Face of Byzantium” is a collection of selected works by the famous Russian jurist and Byzantinist A.M. Velichko, which includes works on the history of the Church and works on Byzantine studies. In the first part, such age-old phenomena as papism, the schism of the Church that occurred in the 11th century, the iconoclastic movement, the specifics of the relationship between political and church authorities in Russia on the eve of the abolition of the patriarchate, and the reasons for the creation of the Holy Synod by Peter the Great were subjected to a detailed historical and legal analysis. The second part reveals the idea of monarchical power, as it was formulated in Byzantium, describes the legal and political forms in which it was realized, as well as the crisis of the “symphony of powers” in “late” Byzantium on the eve of its death. The book is intended for students of law, history faculties, religious educational institutions, as well as all those interested in the theory and history of the Church, law and state, the theology of law.
