This book tells about the iconoclastic stage in the history of the Byzantine Empire (VIII-IX centuries), characterized not only by church disputes on this issue, which were resolved by the last, VII Ecumenical Council, but also by the most important foreign policy events. First of all, these include the formation of the new Western Roman Empire led by Charlemagne and his successors and the so-called “papal revolution”, which became a harbinger of the coming schism between the Eastern and Roman churches in 1054 - these events are described in detail and in detail.
