Harry Gray wrote this biographical novel in solitary confinement at Sing Sing Prison. As a member of a criminal gang that the whole country feared, he realistically depicted life in America during the Great Depression: Prohibition, bootleggers, prostitution, robbery and murder. The heroes of the book come from poor immigrant neighborhoods of New York. In conditions of lawlessness and lack of work, they make their way in life with the help of friendship and a gun.
