Only the wilder savages, inhabiting the planets devastated during the galactic expansion, retained their human nature. Many centuries later, alarming news began to arrive from the center of the Galaxy, called the Inferno. The chance to understand what was happening fell to the Maromanian officer Max Hauer and the Daktian tactician Cyrus Rem, when the mysterious ship "Steel Butterfly", which disappeared many years ago just near the Inferno, suddenly appeared in the outlying sector.
