At the very end of the First World War, a young Englishwoman, Emily Bryce, falls in love with a young and brave pilot, Robert Kerr, who is in hospital and will soon return to the front. Knowing that her parents, who have already found a profitable groom for their daughter, will not approve of such a choice, the girl enlists in the Women's Agricultural Army and leaves for hard agricultural work away from home. She is burning with a patriotic desire to bring as much benefit to the country as possible, dreams of a happy marriage, but does not yet know what terrible trials fate has in store for her.
