In the summer of 1984, as dusk falls on an idyllic suburban Dublin village, mothers call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children, two boys and a girl, do not return from the dark and silent forest. The police will only find one boy, Adam. Twenty years later, the boy found, now named Rob Ryan, works as a detective in the Dublin homicide department and keeps his past a secret. But when the body of a murdered twelve-year-old girl is found near the same forest, everything is frighteningly reminiscent of that long-ago unsolved crime. According to one version of Rob Ryan and his partner Cassie Maddox, who are entrusted with the investigation, this murder of a child may have something to do with the children who disappeared twenty years ago. Going through the fragments of surviving, but long-buried memories, Ryan realizes that he has a chance not only to solve a new crime, but also to find a solution to the mystery of his own past.
