The book tells about the life of one of the first Russian paleontologists, Vladimir Prokhorovich Amalitsky (1859–1917), who obtained numerous remains of animals and plants of the Permian period in northern Russia. His findings served as the foundation for Russian vertebrate paleontology and became the core of the Paleontological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The history of Amalitsky’s discoveries, as well as the fate of his collection, was traced on the basis of archival documents, as well as newspaper and magazine notes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author of the book is a historian of paleontology, scientific journalist A. E. Nelikhov, author of more than a hundred articles and several monographs about paleontology and fossil animals of Russia.
