Adrienne Carter moves to a small town in Florida, where she buys an old house on the coast. In the attic, she accidentally discovers a box with a photograph and a bunch of letters. The letters are dated 1942–1944. Young soldier William Bryant uses them to address his beloved. The letters are so poetic and touching that Adrienne decides to find their author, if he is still alive. She manages to find Mr. Bryant's address, but it turns out that a man fifty years younger lives there. His name is also William, and he immediately understands what Adrienne wants to talk about. Alas, he refuses to help her, but this meeting intrigues Adrienne even more.
