The book examines the events of the political struggle in Roman society, the confrontation between the optimates and the populares, complex conflicts and intrigues within the power elite of the Roman Senate. In addition to the actual history of events, the author gives a broad overview of sources on the history of Caesar and an analysis of his image in world historiography. The personalities of his friends and enemies, political allies and opponents (Pompey, Crassus, Cato, Cicero, Mark Antony and many others) are also examined.
