“The cows sensed the approaching danger before us.” Thus begins the story of Lily Casey, a woman who always got along better with animals than with people. In her family, Lily, even as a child, was the most sober person. When, during a flood, she bailed out water and saved the younger children, everyone else prayed to God. In her youth, Lily decided to train as a teacher, but she had to leave school because her father spent the money set aside for her education on purebred puppies. Fate was never kind Lily: she survived tornadoes, floods, drought and the Great Depression, but the hardest thing was to survive the terrible betrayal of loved ones. Over the years of her life, Lily rode dozens and hundreds of wild horses, but was never able to tame her rebellious daughter.
