At the age of 19, Günther Halm became the youngest holder of the Knight's Cross and the first private of the Panzerwaffe to receive this highest military award, which was presented to him personally by Field Marshal Rommel, who noted the “unparalleled personal courage” of the young soldier. Fighting in the Afrika Korps as a gunner on a captured Soviet 76-mm gun, Heim burned 9 British tanks (eight Valentines and the commanding Matilda) in one battle, effectively deciding the outcome of the Battle of El Alamein. Even the British themselves then admitted the crushing defeat of their tank brigade, which “was destroyed in its entirety by incredibly accurate fire” from German anti-tank guns and panzers. “We fired continuously - one shot after another. We acted calmly, as if we were wounded up, without experiencing the slightest fear. The British tanks have a narrow view, and they did not immediately determine where we were firing from. But when they identified it, that’s when it began! Several shells pierced the armor of the gun shield at once. The loader screamed as he bled. And again a direct hit on the shield, a few seconds later another. But we didn’t pay any attention to them - we continued to fire as if nothing had happened. And then, as soon as I recoiled from the optics, the torn sight whizzed past me. An insignificant fraction of a second decided whether I should live or die. I felt sticky warm blood on my face and, having felt my head, I was convinced that there were fragments stuck in the skull. One of them still sits under my skull bone...” In addition to El Alamein, the author had the opportunity to fight near Tobruk and in Normandy. This book is the “trench truth” of Panzer Metzger (literally: “tank butcher” - the front-line nickname of the most effective German anti-tank soldiers), who has earned the reputation of the best “TANK KILLER”.
