At the center of the novel “Dressed in Stone” (1924–1925) is the tragic fate of the “mysterious prisoner” of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Russian revolutionary Mikhail Stepanovich Beideman. By order of Alexander II, without trial, on the basis of a forged manifesto that called on the people to destroy the autocracy, he was kept in solitary confinement in the Alekseevsky ravelin for 20 years.
