In April 2019, about four billion people around the world were able to see the first ever image of a black hole (55 million light years from Earth, the center of the M87 galaxy). Heino Falcke, who led an international team of researchers, and science journalist Jörg Römer wrote a book about the events that preceded the birth of this image. The reader of “Light in the Darkness” will learn how a group of enthusiastic scientists first convinced allocators of resources (money, radio telescopes, powerful computers) to allocate a sufficient amount of them for the planned project, and then carried out observations, analyzed the data and received the long-awaited image. “A mythical creature of cosmic proportions took on shape and color, and everyone could see it,” concludes Falke. He worked on this project for more than twenty years, and he, a believing Christian and lay pastor, was not afraid that many call black holes “the gates of hell,” because the goal of science is to push the boundaries of the unknown. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format. p>
