Johann August Suter fled his native Switzerland to escape creditors, and contributed greatly to the development of then undeveloped California. But one of the richest men in America was ruined when gold was discovered on his lands, which began the famous “gold rush.” Using the genre of adventure novel, Cendrars created a tragic epic of the New World.
