He fought like Suvorov: not in numbers, but in skill. He is rightfully considered one of the best tank commanders of the Great Patriotic War. In his declining years, he became the chief marshal of the armored forces and the chief of the tank forces of the Soviet Union. And Hamazasp Babajanyan became famous back in August 1941, when his tank regiment, having made a night march through enemy rear lines, captured the “height of death” near Yelnya, which forced the Germans to leave the city. Since then, tank raids have become the specialty of this brave, resourceful and highly educated commander. Throughout the war, Babajanyan’s tankers, who fought in the corps of the legendary Katukov, were at the forefront of the main attack of the Red Army - they swept away enemy defenses, destroyed German communications, and took cities deep behind enemy lines. Colonel Babajanyan distinguished himself during the crossing of the Dniester, at the Sandomierz bridgehead (where he was seriously wounded in the chest, but returned to duty just 20 days later) and in the battle for Berlin. Amazasp Khachaturovich spoke about all these battles in his memoirs, recognized as one of the best books about the combat use of Soviet tanks in the Great Patriotic War. In this publication, the memoirs of the chief marshal of the armored forces are supplemented with unique photographs from the family archive and personal notes of the author, sometimes very harsh and critical , which have never been published before.
