Every atom in the Universe, and not just various macroscopic objects, is capable of storing information. Acts of interaction between atoms can be described as elementary logical operations in which quantum bits—elementary units of quantum information—change their values. Seth Lloyd's paradoxical but promising approach allows us to elegantly solve the problem of the constant complication of the Universe: even a random and very short program, when executed on a computer, can give extremely interesting results. The Universe is constantly processing information - being a huge quantum computer, it is constantly calculating its own future. And even such fundamental events as the birth of life, sexual reproduction, and the emergence of intelligence can and should be considered as successive revolutions in information processing.
