The book is dedicated to a prominent statesman of three reigns: Alexander I, Nicholas I and Alexander II - Dmitry Nikolaevich Bludov (1785–1864). It examines the least known period of his service - the diplomatic one, which occurred during the era of the Napoleonic wars with Russia; shows the importance that Alexander I attached to the Russian language in diplomatic documents, and Bludov’s fulfillment of the instructions given to him by the emperor. Bludov left his mark in the history of Russian foreign relations. One of the “archive youths”, a representative of the “golden” Moscow youth of the 1800s, diplomat and Arzamas resident Bludov, having gone through the school of diplomatic service, came to the conviction of the need to reform the Russian national education system as the main means of development of the country. Using the example of Bludov, the origins of the formation of the phenomenon of “enlightened bureaucracy” and the process of its professionalization are shown. The book is based on sources, including unpublished ones. It is of interest to everyone interested in Russian history, Russian diplomacy and literature.
