Maxim Semelak, a music journalist and one of the many people whose life trajectory was forever changed by the influence of the songs of “Civil Defense,” was supposed to begin work on the book together with Yegor Letov in 2008. The plans were interrupted by the death of the main character. Over the past 13 years, Letov has become, as he wanted, a folklore character, dispersing into quotes, slogans and memes: his legacy is claimed by people of various political views and personal convictions, his fans are countless, as are the interpretations of his songs. “So It’s a Hurricane” offers an up-close look and first-hand answers; this is a book about personal relationships with the Civil Defense and its leader, and at the same time about the history of love and hatred of the post-Soviet world towards a clumsy man with glasses. Relations with nature and neighbors in Omsk, alliance with Eduard Limonov, premonition of death, first foreign tours, substances, football, revolution, continuous search for inspiration and a strong manner of managing a team. On the pages of Semelak’s book, Letov appears as a living person: funny, violent and unsolved.
