Pennsylvania is one of the 13 original states of the United States. Pennsylvania began in 1681 as an English colony intended to be settled by Quakers. Quakers had a reputation as stubborn religious eccentrics who understood Christianity in a unique way: they did not take off their hats even to the most important bosses, they addressed everyone as “you” (thou instead of you), they did not call the summer month July, and the day of the week Wednesday (Wednesday), so that not to honor the pagan Julius Caesar and the pagan god Wodan in this way. the Quaker colony quickly became prosperous, and its main city, Philadelphia, became the most comfortable in America. The book describes the first 20 years of Pennsylvanian history and attempts to determine the significance of Pennsylvania in the process of becoming an independent United States in comparison with Virginia, Massachusetts, and New York.
