Dreams of military glory for young Gottfried from a line of knights turn into a nightmare when the army of Nevenka Neroda and twelve Dead commanders descend on his father’s fortress. Neroda demands to give up an ancient magical artifact, which the defenders know about only from old fairy tales. In response to the refusal, the army destroys the castle and massacres its inhabitants. Gottfried manages to escape, hides in a huge cave - and finds the famous sword of Daubendier, which once belonged to the legendary hero of antiquity. Thirsty for fresh blood, Daubendier promises Gottfried revenge for his relatives. But, having accepted the weapon, Gottfried understands: the price of the acquired power is monstrous.
