Denmark, 10th century. Once upon a time, on the wasteland near the sacred stone of Freya, Harald, the son of King Gorm, met a witch, who before his eyes was turning from an old woman into a red-haired girl, and from a girl again into an old woman. Having caught the witch, he found out that he had seen two different women: the mother and daughter of King Olaf, their enemy, whom Knut, Harald’s elder brother, had recently defeated in battle. Soon the young Gunhild becomes Knut's bride, which Harald does not want to come to terms with: he sees her as either a witch or a goddess, and her presence does not give him peace. With her appearance in Gorm’s house, witchcraft really began, which would leave its mark on the fate of the future unifier and baptist of Denmark. But for now, torn between his own wife and his brother’s fiancee, he cannot allow Gunhilda to marry someone else.
