Johannes Steinhoff, the famous German fighter pilot, talks about Operation Husky, when British and American air forces continuously bombed German and Italian airfields in Sicily. Under pressure from superior Allied forces, Luftwaffe losses became irreparable. For experienced pilots, veterans of battles in Western Europe and Russia, death was almost inevitable; young pilots had even less chance of survival, but there was no order to retreat. Steinhof in his memoirs conveys the full tragedy of the current situation, when Goering, who did not understand what was happening, accused the famous aces of cowardice and threatened them with a tribunal. Despising him for his incompetence, they still went to certain death.
