Xenophon (c. 430-354 BC) is the most famous ancient Greek historian and writer, a student of Socrates. He received an excellent education and acquired extensive political and military experience. A staunch opponent of Athenian democracy, he idealized the Spartan political system and monarchical ideals. “Greek History” is one of the main works of Xenophon, covering the period from 411 to the Battle of Mantinea in 362, the period of formation and flourishing of Greek statehood. The wealth of factual material in “Greek History” is successfully combined with the accessibility and clarity of presentation by the author, a direct participant in many of the events he describes. This edition reproduces the Russian translation by S. Ya. Lurie (Leningrad, 1935), newly edited by R. V. Svetlov. The text of the book is published according to the publication: Xenophon “Greek History”, St. Petersburg, “Aletheia”, 1996

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
