Dumas’ story “Otho the Archer” is a free adaptation of a number of Lower Rhine (German and Dutch) legends, inscribed in the specific historical context of the mid-14th century. In this story, as in many of his other works, Dumas uses the technique of combining fiction and reality: real place names, titles, surnames, names are attached in never-existing combinations to the characters created by his imagination.
