A directive from the US Joint Defense Planning Committee targeted 20 Soviet cities for atomic bombing. It was planned to drop 196 atomic bombs on them. This plan was called "Pliers". In addition to a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, an American landing on Cuba was also planned for the fall of 1962. It was then that the leadership of the USSR made a forced decision to conduct an unprecedented military operation to secretly transfer Soviet troops and weapons to Liberty Island. Operation Anadyr, the transfer of people and equipment across seas and oceans from the USSR to Cuba, is inscribed in golden letters in the annals of world military art.
