Автор майстерно відтворює атмосферу 105 року нашої ери, занурюючи читача в реалії життя на дунайському кордоні Риму. Сюжет наповнений напругою, адже центуріон Флавій Ферокс, опинившись у складній ситуації, змушений не лише виконувати свої обов'язки, а й боротися з внутрішніми ворогами. Персонажі прописані дуже детально, їхні переживання та мотивації викликають співчуття і розуміння. Особливо цікаво спостерігати за розвитком відносин між Фероксом та його підлеглими, адже багато з них мають темне минуле. Опис військових стратегій і битв настільки реалістичний, що немов відчуваєш себе частиною цих подій. Книга не лише розважальна, але й пізнавальна, адже Голдсуорсі досконало знає римську армію та її особливості.
