In 1924, a courtesan named Caroline Crane disappears without a trace in London. The Norwegian psychoanalyst Sigmund Arneson is mysteriously connected with her disappearance. Scotland Yard Inspector Maurice Cunningham is initially convinced that this is a simple murder of jealousy. However, the more he gets involved in the investigation, the more it turns out that no one in this story really knows anything about the missing girl - or about himself. Events unfold into a phantasmagoric story, similar to the story of Jekyll and Hyde, and the inspector is forced to explore the mysteries of human sexuality.
