The novel by the famous marine painter Alexei Silych Novikov-Priboy (1877–1944) tells the story of the fate of the Russian sailor Zakhar Psaltyrev. A strong-willed and gifted man, he goes through a difficult life path from a sailor in the Tsarist Navy to the commander of a Soviet warship. The film of the same name was shot in 1958 by director Alexander Mandrykin, starring: Boris Livanov, Mikhail Orlov, Vladimir Emelyanov. The book also includes stories created by the author over the years.
