Petrograd in 1922, the capital of the victorious empire in the World War. But there is no sense of triumph in the city. Petrograd is blown by an icy wind, police zeppelins are searching their streets with searchlights, and when they hang above their heads, the townspeople try not to think too much. Emperor Nicholas II himself left his capital long ago: there he imagined the workers he had shot rising from their graves. The generals are plotting, a whole army of mechanical soldiers is being prepared in the dungeons of the city, and the secret police, the political police, will not warn the tsar about this.
