Captain Thornhill, an Englishman expelled from his fatherland, is in the service of the French crown and trades in piracy. During one of the robberies, priceless booty falls into his hands - a five-year-old girl from an English ship, the daughter of his worst enemy. Deciding to make the baby an instrument of revenge, the captain raises her according to the laws of the pirate world, and then, at the instigation of Cardinal Richelieu, sends her to England to spy. However, in England events do not unfold at all as Thornhill intended; love turns out to be an obstacle to his insidious plan.
