There have been at least eleven major attempts to invade the British Isles in modern and recent history. The Spanish in 1588, the French in 1692, 1696, 1708, 1744–1745, 1759, 1802–1803, Franco-Spanish forces in 1779, 1796–1798, 1804–1805, and Nazi troops in 1940 - they all tried or planned to land their troops in England, but for various reasons this failed. In a new book with the provocative title “Seize England!” It examines in detail ten failed attempts from 1588 to 1805, as well as William III of Orange's landing in England in 1688 and the failed Operation Seelowe-Sea Lion of 1940. For some reason, the historical and near-historical literature has established the opinion that the landing in England could not have happened, since this could never have happened. This very strange logic is based on the opinion of the strength of the British fleet, which allegedly gained undeniable supremacy at sea by 1588 and maintained it until the end of World War II. Meanwhile, very often the fate of Britain hung in the balance, the Royal Navy in some cases could not even control its coastal waters, and only inconsistency in the actions of the aggressors was the lifesaver that saved the Island.
