Grand Duke Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy is one of the most revered Russian princes and saints. It was he, a talented diplomat and politician, who in 1374 refused to pay tribute to the ruler of the Golden Horde, Mamai. And on September 8 (21), 1380, on the legendary Kulikovo field, Russian soldiers of Dmitry Ivanovich defeated Mamai’s army. For the first time, the Russians realized that the Tatar-Mongols could be beaten, and beaten hard. And that was the first step towards an open struggle against the yoke, which Donskoy’s descendants completely destroyed.
