The novels “Biography of Hunger” and “Love Sabotage” are autobiographical, if you believe the author-character, the author-werewolf, who plays with the reader like a cat with a mouse. In “Love Sabotage” we see totalitarian China during the “gang of four” times, where Amelie lived with her father, a major Belgian diplomat. In “The Biography of Hunger,” countries flash by as if on a movie screen: Japan, the USA, Bangladesh, Burma, Laos, Belgium, and China again. Amelie here is first a little girl, then a teenager, with all the “girly” experiences, love, grievances and passion for exotic things, people and languages. The political map of the 70s and 80s appears before the reader in full view, brightly colored and funny drawn in the key of a masterfully modeled - but seemingly not childish at all - perception of the unpredictable Amelie.
