Sturgeon’s 1950 novel “The Synthetic Man” (Alternatively titled “The Dreaming Jewels”) combines “hard” (natural science) SF with a “horror novel”: dreams of alien crystals materialize into humanoids — freaks who are picked up by the owner of a traveling circus who is up to no good; however, one of the freaks, with the help of his beloved girl, kills the villain (and comes to the understanding that humanity is determined less by biology, and more by communication with people, life in the human community).
