This long story is directly related to the novel “Interstellar Sin” (“Lovers”), since its hero, Jean-Jacques Rastignac, is the future father of Jeanette, that same unfortunate “Laylitha” who dies from love for the earthling Jarrow. Here we are talking about the inheritance of external appearance, which is achieved thanks to “veils”, living organisms that are voluntarily worn by the inhabitants of the planet New Gaul. It is the “veils” that bring residents together and punish the obstinate for bad behavior with literal “remorse.” The story is rich in thought; in contrast to Gandhi’s theory, it philosophically justifies violence aimed at overcoming the psychological conditioning leading to the enslavement of people by the “veils.” . But Farmer’s omnipresent sense of humor, which emerges even in the most serious passages, trips up the author in Rastignac-The-Devil. The story degenerates into a satirical farce: the “ancient secret” of immoderation in libations reliably protects people from “veils”, the detective-occultist Jules de Grandin, the child of the pen of Seabury Quinn, is obviously parodied, and the priest Father Jules every now and then mentions evil spirits - and serious reading the story becomes impossible.
