The Golden Chalice is John Steinbeck's first novel. This is a fictionalized biography of Henry Morgan, a pirate admiral and the luckiest "gentleman of fortune." In his youth, he spent several years in slavery, and subsequently became famous as a skilled military leader and vice-governor of Jamaica. The central theme of the novel is the cunning assault, lightning capture and ruthless plunder of the Golden Chalice - the so-called Panama, which was the richest city in the West Indies. All the wealth of Panama ended up in Morgan's hands, which, however, did not bring him happiness.
