Birds stuffing their stomachs with plastic. Turtles getting stuck in bags. We have all heard that garbage destroys nature. It seems that it is somewhere far away, but garbage lives next to us. It's getting close to cities, and right now its smell could burn someone's throat. There are microplastic particles in the water, and toxic dioxins in the food. People are unhappy - Russia is choking on garbage. However, everything is changing: garbage reform is underway in the country. But what will its results be? Journalist Andrei Yakovlev found out everything about our garbage: he visited landfills and sorting stations, talked with environmentalists, officials and entrepreneurs. What happens after you throw unnecessary things into the bin? What does the smoke and ash from waste incineration plants threaten us with? How does the state fight activists? And why is recycling not profitable for him? Wasteland combines journalistic research with the inner journey of a man wondering how we can live with our trash.
