The young artist Kate, an impractical and romantically inclined girl, works part-time in a service bureau. She entertains old ladies, sits with children, accompanies lonely ladies to theatrical performances... But one fine day she is asked to go on an errand to the city of her dreams - Rome. For Kate this is a real gift of fate. And the order is a couple of trifles: to deliver a little girl, the heiress of a rich family, from Rome to London. And everything would have been fine, but the trip turned out to be not at all as idyllic as the girl had imagined. And the girl turned out to be strange, and sinister strangers keep appearing dangerously close, and a mysterious handsome man constantly catches the eye. And to top it all off, the young ward disappears. But Kate is not a timid person. She decides to find the girl on her own and put everything in its place. But it would be better for her to quietly return to London, return to her paints, easels and lonely old women. Events begin to develop with kaleidoscopic speed, and at the center is Kate Tempest, with her habit of poking her nose where it shouldn’t and her desire to get to the bottom.
