In the preface to his Stratagems, Frontin explains the purpose of his work and its composition. He hopes that the collected and systematized examples of the skillful deeds of commanders will serve as a source and stimulus for the military creativity of commanders. And the presentation should be brief, because “busy people need to be given emergency assistance.” Frontin distributes the compiled historical material and, possibly, his own observations into three categories: 1) stratagems related to the preparation of battle, 2) stratagems in battle and immediately after the battle; 3) stratagems during the siege of cities. Within these large sections, narrower divisions are given. This systematic presentation makes it easy to review the entire book and find the information you need. All stratagems are laid out according to the same plan; Each paragraph begins with the name of the main character, and the author tries to fit the entire paragraph into one or two phrases. This gives tension and speed to the presentation and at the same time makes it easier to find the deeds of a particular commander.
